Nick Dunlap, of Huntsville, Ala., and a sophomore at the University of Alabama, defeated Pennsylvanian Neal Shipley, 4 and 3, in the 36-hole final at Cherry Hills Country Club in suburban Denver. Dunlap joined Tiger Woods as the only players in USGA history to have won a U.S. Junior Amateur and U.S. Amateur.

22 sty 2024 · University of Alabama sophomore men’s golfer Nick Dunlap became the first amateur to win a PGA Tour event since 1991 when he claimed The American Express on Sunday evening. Dunlap won the event by one stroke over Christiaan Bezuidenhout, finishing the 72-hole tournament at 29-under par 259 (64-65-60-70).

Playing in just his fourth tour event, he became only the seventh amateur winner since 1945 — and the third since 1957.
