A chevron (also spelled cheveron, especially in older documents) is a V-shaped mark or symbol, often inverted. The word is usually used in reference to a kind of fret in architecture, or to a badge or insignia used in military or police uniforms to indicate rank or length of service, or in heraldry and the designs of flags (see flag terminology).
13 sie 2006 · When I was in the Army (2001-2005), we had to spraypaint “S12” on the sides of our trucks to indicate we were in B co. 101st support battalion. The other companies had S10, S11, etc. The infantry battalion just had numbers (62, 63, IIRC) on the sides of their Bradleys and humvees.

6 lip 2006 · Thew "v" on the 109 is really a "corner" marking a plane of the staff. Staff planes were marked with symbols, while ordinary planes were marked with numbers. A corner usually meant this was a Gruppenadjutant, while for example a Gruppenkommandant (group commander) would have a double corner on his plane.
