Surgery. Most femur fractures require a surgical procedure known as intramedullary fixation. This surgery places a rod (intramedullary nail) within the bone, secured by screws to stabilize it during healing. Once the bone has fully healed, the rod and screws may be removed if necessary. Other surgical options include plating and external fixation.
Your thighbone (femur) is the longest and strongest bone in your body. Because the femur is so strong, it usually takes a lot of force to break it. Motor vehicle collisions, for example, are the number one cause of femur fractures. The long, straight part of the femur is called the femoral shaft.
The middle part of your thigh bone is called the femoral shaft. The top of your femur connects to your hip, and the bottom connects to your lower leg at the knee. Figure 1: Skeleton and x-rays showing the femur, and how it makes up the ball part of your hip joint and the upper part of your knee joint.
Pieces of your femur break through your skin and you are bleeding. This is called an open fracture. Pieces of your femur push up against your skin but don’t pierce your skin. This is called a closed fracture. Your thigh is bruised. Parts of your thigh are swollen.
8 paź 2023 · Femoral shaft fractures are high energy injuries to the femur that are associated with life-threatening injuries (pulmonary, cerebral) and ipsilateral femoral neck fractures. Diagnosis is made radiographically with radiographs of the femur as well as the hip to rule out ipsilateral femoral neck fractures.
