Without removing the upholstery, one option here might be to use a button tufting needle such as the No. 417 Tufting Needle by C.S. Osborne. That tool costs around $60 retail with some clasps included (you'll need them). The tufting needle inserts a small clasp into the fabric, from which a piece of tufting twine is threaded.
