The mission of the Packingtown Museum is to preserve, interpret and present the industrial history and cultural heritage of Chicago’s Union Stock Yard and surrounding neighborhoods.
The Union Stock Yard & Transit Co., or The Yards, was the meatpacking district in Chicago for more than a century, starting in 1865. The district was operated by a group of railroad companies that acquired marshland and turned it into a centralized processing area. By the 1890s, the railroad capital behind the Union Stockyards was Vanderbilt money.
Since the opening of the Union Stock Yard in 1865, the livestock market and packinghouses attracted a diverse population of workers and others to the neighborhoods surrounding Packingtown.

Here, 320 acres of swampland lying between Pershing Avenue, Halsted Street, 47th Street, and Ashland Avenue were transformed into the world's largest livestock trading and meat processing center.
