The division of Union and Confederate states during the American Civil War. In the context of the American Civil War, the Union, or the United States, is sometimes referred to as "the North", both then and now, as opposed to the Confederacy, which was often called "the South".
At the beginning of the war, the Union flag carried 33 stars, like the Fort Sumter flag (above). However, in early 1861, Kansas joined the Union. This brought the official star total up to 34.
The thirty-three stars represented the number of states in the Union, prior to the Civil War. This flag was flown at Fort Sumter, where the Civil War began. This flag represented the time period between 1861-1863. An additional star was added when Kansas joined the Union on July 4, 1861.

The original flag used during the attack on Fort Sumter was the 33-star flag, created in 1859 after the admission of Oregon into the United States of America. On July 4, 1861 the 34-star flag became the official flag of the United States of America to honor the admission of Kansas as a state.
