Undergraduates are automatically enrolled in the UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) unless they waive the coverage. The cost of coverage through UC SHIP will be included as part of your Student Services Fees. You’ll receive more information about UC SHIP with your first BruinBill.
An ER visit with UCSHIP costs $125 while a similar ER visit with my parents insurance costed over $3k. UCSHIP has incredible coverage of psychiatric care in particular—therapy and psychiatry are entirely free in-network. Meds are also covered really well.
Students have 2 options: Remain enrolled in UC SHIP and pay the UC SHIP fees ($741.90/qtr) via UCLA BruinBill by the deadlines (fall – 9/20/18; winter – 12/20/18; spring – 3/20/19), OR.
Waiving SHIP. Students that have comparable local health insurance are eligible to waive UCSHIP. If you are interested in waiving UCSHIP, be sure to first look at the Ashe Center Waiving UCSHIP information for step-by-step instructions. Once you have determined that you are eligible to waive UCSHIP, you can fill out the waiver online. BruinCare
