I noticed Specialized, now Santa Cruz and Scott, are using chainstay protectors with ridges, ribs or waves to cancel out chain slap noise. Although I typically enjoy a bit of slapping and noise, I prefer silence on the bike.

I'm just curious what everyone uses to protect their chainstay. The clear protector on my chainstay is wearing through and chipping paint so I need a new one. However, this makes me wonder. Can this damage lead to big problems like a weakened chainstay? The frame is aluminum.
