Surgical removal of the heartworms is currently the recommended treatment for cats with severe signs of heartworm disease. This procedure must be performed by a specialist, often at a college of veterinary medicine.
Treatment. The American Heartworm Society does not currently recommend adulticide therapy in cats. Instead, a “slow kill” method is used, and unlike the case in dogs, most treatment for heartworm disease in cats is supportive. The death of the heartworms leads to a reaction in cats that is often fatal.

Unfortunately, there is no approved drug therapy for heartworm infection in cats, and the drug used to treat infections in dogs is not safe for cats. Nevertheless, cats with heartworm disease can often be helped with good veterinary care.
7 mar 2023 · There is no FDA-approved treatment for cats with heartworm infection. Treatment is focused on supportive treatment (e.g., oxygen therapy, intravenous fluids, steroids, bronchodilators, etc.). Preventative treatments are very effective and crucial for cats to avoid heartworm infection.
Cats with clearly apparent signs of heartworm disease may require additional supportive treatment in the form of intravenous fluids, oxygen therapy, cardiovascular drugs and antibiotics. Protective Measures
