Tourism is a social, cultural and economic phenomenon which entails the movement of people to countries or places outside their usual environment for personal or business/professional purposes.
In Chapter 3, the main concepts and definitions with respect to tourism are presented and discussed. Special attention is given to the concepts of international tourism, domestic tourism, and same-day visits. Finally, Chapter 4 starts with a brief inventory of the key characteristics of tourism.
This problematizes the conventional WTO definition of a tourist. Content analysis of literature marshals evidence of existence of a knowledge gap and an opportunity for Third World destinations to mainstream domestic tourism as a panacea for sustainable tourism development.
Enhancing the well-being of individuals, safeguarding the natural environment, stimulating economic advancement, and fostering international harmony are key goals that are the fundamental essence of UN Tourism.
