Total money makeover is what sold me on FPU. It's been many years now, but the class was fantastic and made you do tasks week per week in the class. I would highly recommend FPU. You can find total money makeover used for cheap. Local used bookstore had many copies.
$1k is skinny for an emergency fund in 2018. Dave's advice hasn't changed in 30 years, but inflation has. I'd aim at more like 1.5-2k. Dave recommends stopping 401k contributions even if there is a match. I get why he does this, he wants people radically focused on paying debt. I personally disagree with this one though.
