The Smeltery is a multi-block structure used in the creation of higher-tier weapons and tools using metal and alloys. It is used to smelt ores, ingots or blocks of almost any metal as well as Obsidian. Alloys include Manyullyn, Bronze, Alumite, Aluminum Brass, and Pig Iron.

I read the mod book "Materials and You" for Tinkers' Construct 1.12.2-2.10.1.87 and it mentions 11x11 (9x9 internal) being the largest size possible. Verified that 11x11 works in my game, and I'm using a mix of seared bricks and seared stone.
The next step is to build a Smeltery, so you can process metals and use them for tool parts as well. All you need is some gravel, sand and clay. You can even automate your Smeltery.
