EUROPOP2023, the latest population projections released by Eurostat on 30 March 2023, provide the baseline projections for population developments from 2023 to 2100 for 30 European countries: all of the EU Member States and three EFTA countries (Iceland, Norway and Switzerland), using data for population on 1 January 2022 as a starting point.
On 1 January 2022, there were 446.7 million people living in the European Union (EU). The most populous EU Member State was Germany (83.2 million, 19% of the EU total), followed by France (67.9 million, 15%), Italy (59.0 million, 13%), Spain (47.4 million, 11%) and Poland (37.7 million, 8%).

All but three EU member states have a population exceeding one million residents. Cyprus, Luxembourg and Malta are the three least-populated member states, with Malta’s population falling just over 500,000 people. Malta is also the smallest member state by area.
As of 1 January 2024, the population of the EU is around 449 million people. [1] The most populous member state is Germany, with an estimated 83.4 million people, and the least populous member state is Malta with 0.56 million. Birth rates in the EU are in the low range, with the average woman having 1.6 children.
