Much of my practice proceeds as such: listen to a talk, read a book, have a conceptual understanding and some degree of experiential recognition in what teaching I’m exposed to, then over the following weeks essentially try to force myself through repetition to adopt my understanding of the aforementioned teaching as my intuitive force.
Zen is a Mahayana practice and hence follows those views, as opposed to the Theravada which draws from the suttas of the Pali Canon and Abhidhamma. The primary difference is Mahayana focuses on emptiness and attaining Buddhahood where you vow to assist others to awakening, post your own.
14 sty 2020 · I've been considering of late how much the Theravadin tradition might be more geared to monastic life than lay. To the point that it often feels like there is a massive difference between the practice of the lay and the monastic is huge. Any thoughts on this or am I overthinking?
In 2015 (I think it's 2558 in Asian Buddhist calendars), it is not meaningful to consider "Theravāda" as any doctrinal position. Along with Dharmaguptaka and Mūlasarvastivāda, Theravāda is simply a monastic lineage. Doctrinally, I think the Thera tradition is much more vast and diverse than that.
