The Message is a reading Bible translated from the original Greek and Hebrew Scriptures by scholar, pastor, author, and poet Eugene Peterson. Peterson spent ten years working on The Message after teaching in seminary and preaching in churches for more than thirty years.
If you like reading Scripture but are uncomfortable with NASB and ESV-like translations, NIV is indeed a good choice, but the NLT (New Living Translation) might be even better - it reads like a paraphrase but is still a translation, and I've heard positive things about the NLT by scholars.
