In the Netherlands, education is compulsory for pupils between 5 and 16 years of age. The law requires pupils who have not gained a diploma at NLQF-level 2 or higher at 16 years of age, to be in education and attend school until they turn 18.
The Dutch education system consists of 8 years of primary education, 4, 5 or 6 years of secondary education (depending on the type of school) and 2 to 6 years of higher education (depending on the type of education and the specialisation).
General overview. Educational policy is coordinated by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science with municipal governments. Compulsory education (leerplicht) in the Netherlands starts at the age of five, although in practice, most schools accept children from the age of four.
