The Texas State Police (TSP) is a defunct 19th century law enforcement agency that was created following the Civil War by order of Texas Governor Edmund J. Davis. The TSP worked primarily against racially based crimes in Texas, and included black policemen. It was replaced by a renewed Texas Rangers force in 1873.

A number of studies, including one by the Committee on Lawlessness and Violence of the Constitutional Convention of 1868–69, indicated the need for a statewide organization with the ability to work in any jurisdiction.
July - Rising violence and gangs move Governor Edmund J. Davis to create three organizations to fight crime: the State Police, the State Guard of Texas and the Texas Reserve Militia. The State Police served much the same purpose as the Texas Rangers but were intensely unpopular as their ranks included former African American slaves.

This rare law enforcement badge is a symbol of the first policing opportunities available to African Americans in Texas, other than the famous Buffalo Soldier regiments. Following the Civil War, employment opportunities for newly-freed African Americans were limited in scope.
