The State of Texas has executed 591 people since 1982, more than any other state by far. Of these executions, 279 occurred during the administration of Texas Governor Rick Perry (2001-2014), more than any other governor in U.S. history. Texas has executed five men in 2024.

Capital punishment is a legal penalty in the U.S. state of Texas for murder, and participation in a felony resulting in death if committed by an individual who has attained or is over the age of 18. In 1982, the state became the first jurisdiction in the world to carry out an execution by lethal injection , when it executed Charles Brooks Jr.
California (29%), Florida (14%), and Texas (8%) held more than half of the prisoners under sentence of death in the United States on December 31, 2021. The BOP held 42 prisoners under sentence of death at yearend. At yearend 2021, 30 states and the federal government had death penalty statutes (map 1).
Seven states executed a total of 22 prisoners in 2019. Texas executed 9 prisoners, which accounted for 41% of the executions carried out in 2019. Tis report presents statistics on persons who were under sentence of death or were executed in 2019, and on state and federal death penalty laws.
Use of the death penalty in Texas remained near historic low levels this year, with juries sentencing three people to death and the state executing three people. Unlike in 2020, however, the COVID-19 pandemic was not the primary cause of the low numbers.
