This test pattern is intentionally extremely flickery, for the purpose of maximizing contrast between refresh cycles during super-slow-motion video analysis.

But the actual test is done by tracking the ufo with your eyes, which makes the background look like a checkerboard while tracking the UFO, relative to the UFO. If you look elsewhere, it won't work as it appears that the checkerboard is moving slower than the UFO. It's easier without strobing.
