Short telomere syndromes (STSs) are accelerated aging syndromes with multisystemic manifestations that present complex management challenges. In this article, we discuss a single-institution experience in diagnosing and managing patients with inherited STSs.
24 maj 2018 · Short telomere syndromes (STSs) are accelerated aging syndromes often caused by inheritable gene mutations resulting in decreased telomere lengths. Consequently, organ systems with increased cell turnover, such as the skin, bone marrow, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract, are commonly affected.
Telomere lengths can be assessed in peripheral blood granulocytes and lymphocytes using a sensitive technique called flow cytometryefluorescence in situ hybridization, and mutational analysis can be performed using next-generation sequencing assays.
Research to improve care. No effective treatments currently exist to cure telomere biology disorders. So far, patient care is limited to preventive strategies, supportive care and organ transplantation. But recent advancements in gene editing and gene therapy offer hope for the future.
23 paź 2024 · Mayo Clinic has been designated a Tier 1 Center of Excellence for Telomere Biology Disorders by Team Telomere, an international organization devoted to improving the lives of those affected by these complex conditions.
14 lut 2022 · Telomere shortening and damage are recognized causes of cellular senescence and ageing. Several human conditions associated with normal ageing are precipitated by accelerated telomere...
This review paper delves into the intricate and multifaceted relationship between cellular senescence, the influence of telomeres in this process, and the far-reaching consequences of telomeres in the context of aging and age-related diseases.
