Determine if the function \(f(x) = \frac{x^2 - 1}{x - 1}\) is continuous at \(x = 1\). Factor the numerator: \(f(x) = \frac{(x - 1)(x + 1)}{x - 1}\). Simplify: \(f(x) = x + 1\) for \(x \neq 1\). The limit as \(x\) approaches 1 is \(2\), but \(f(1)\) is undefined. Result: The function is not continuous at \(x = 1\).
