This annex describes how to administer, read and interpret a TST using 5 tuberculin units (TU) of tuberculin PPD-S. An alternative to 5 TU of tuberculin PPD-S is 2 TU of tuberculin PPD RT 23.
When given a TST years after infection, these persons may have an initial negative reaction. However, the TST may stimulate the immune system, causing a positive or boosted reaction to subsequent tests. Giving a second TST after an initial negative TST reaction is called two-step testing.
1 cze 2023 · General principles — The TST consists of intradermal injection of tuberculin material, which stimulates a delayed-type hypersensitivity response mediated by T lymphocytes and, in patients with prior mycobacterial exposure, causes induration at the injection site within 48 to 72 hours.
The skin test reaction should be read between 48 and 72 hours after administration. A patient who does not return within 72 hours will need to be rescheduled for another skin test. The reaction should be measured in millimeters of the induration (palpable, raised, hardened area or swelling).
