“A City of Sadness” (original title: “Beiqíng chéngshì”) is a 1989 Taiwanese historical drama film directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien. It is considered a seminal work of Taiwanese cinema and is renowned for its depiction of the political and social upheaval in Taiwan during the 1940s and 1950s.
