Taikyoku is a Chinese philosophical concept that refers to the Taiji, or the supreme ultimate. It is also the name of a set of kata developed by Yoshitaka Funakoshi and introduced by Gichin Funakoshi in Shotokan karate.
This kata is also known as Shotokan Kihon Kata 1. This introductory kata is used by some Shotokan schools as a training tool for low-level color belt students (non-black belt) in order to learn basic Shotokan techniques (i.e. punches & blocks).
