In the United States, systems of oppression (like systemic racism) are woven into the very foundation of American culture, society, and laws. Other examples of systems of oppression are sexism, heterosexism, ableism, classism, ageism, and anti-Semitism.
In this chapter I explicate each of these forms of oppression. Each may entail or cause distributive injustices, but all involve issues of justice beyond distribution. In accordance with ordinary political usage, I suggest that oppression is a condition of groups.
Systemic oppression manifests on the individual, the interpersonal, the institutional, and the structural level, and we ofer an example of each. A teacher holds an unconscious mental model that her students of color are not “college material.”
