10 gru 2022 · If the results show that TSH is high and T-4 is low, then the diagnosis is hypothyroidism. In some cases, the thyroid hormone T-3 may be measured as well. If the second test shows high TSH but T-4 and T-3 are in the standard range, then the diagnosis is a condition called subclinical hypothyroidism.

If you have lower-than-normal T4 levels, it usually indicates hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). Hypothyroidism has several causes, including certain autoimmune diseases , poor iodine intake in your diet and the use of certain medications.
A high level of TSH and a low level of T4 in the blood could mean you have an underactive thyroid. If your test results show raised TSH but normal T4, you may be at risk of developing an underactive thyroid in the future.
