It’s remarkable, then, that when Swan Lake was premiered in 1877, the reception it garnered was lukewarm at best.
Swan Lake (Russian: Лебеди́ное о́зеро, romanized: Lebedínoje ózero, IPA: [lʲɪbʲɪˈdʲinəjə ˈozʲɪrə] listen ⓘ), Op. 20, is a ballet composed by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875–76. Despite its initial failure, it is now one of the most popular of all ballets.
Swan Lake was commissioned in 1875 by Vladimir Petrovich Begichev, the director of the Moscow Imperial Theatre for 800 rubles—about $24,000 in today’s money. A bargain for an orchestral score that in performance lasts nearly three hours and took Tchaikovsky, working at top speed, a year to complete.
Before Tchaikovsky, fairytale ballets were composed from a series of divertissements, but Swan Lake, the first of his three full-length ballets, broke away from this tradition. It is the first recognisably symphonic ballet score, setting to music a dramatic narrative as serious as that of any opera.
