It is measured by inserting a balloon-tipped, multi-lumen catheter (Swan-Ganz catheter) into a central vein and advancing the catheter into a branch of the pulmonary artery.
In 1970, Swan et al described a modified catheter that incorporated an inflatable balloon at its tip. This “balloon flotation catheter” allowed prompt and reliable catherisation of the pulmonary artery (PA) without the need for screening, and minimising the risk of arrhythmias.
