1 paź 2019 · The Java Trench, also known as the Sunda Trench, is located south and west of the islands of Java and Sumatra in the eastern Indian Ocean, and is in excess of 3200 km in length. The trench is formed as the Indo-Australian Plate subducts beneath the Eurasian Plate, at a rate of between 60 and 73 mm per year ( De Mets et al., 2010 ).

The trench stretches from the Lesser Sunda Islands past Java, around the southern coast of Sumatra to the Andaman Islands, and forms the boundary between the Indo-Australian Plate and Eurasian Plate (more specifically, Sunda Plate).

20 lut 2023 · Active subduction at the Sunda trench is the principal driver of ongoing India-Asia convergence and Indian indentation. Our models predict that lateral subduction zones lead to mountain growth like the Himalaya over tens of millions of years.

This same reconstruction suggested that the Sunda trench was in Late Cretaceous to Paleocene time a transform boundary, which became inverted as a subduction zone ~50-45 Ma ago upon the onset of Australia-Eurasia convergence, subducting Indo-Australian oceanic crust towards the NE. We adopt this as the age for the base of the Sunda slab.
