Sunda Trench. The Sunda Trench is a subduction zone extending in an arch from the Northwestern tip of Sumatra to Flores in Eastern Indonesia. A strong earthquake in this zone can generate a tsunami that arrives at the coast within 20 minutes, leaving little time for issuing an early warning.

8 lis 2023 · On 18 November 2022, a strong earthquake occurred in the near trench of Sunda Arc southwest of southern Sumatra, generating a small tsunami recorded at four tide gauge stations (KRUI, BINT, SBLT, and SIKA).
Java lies near an active convergent boundary that separates the Sunda Plate to the north and the Australian Plate to the south. At the boundary, marked by the Sunda Trench , the northward-moving Australian Plate subducts beneath the Sunda Plate.
