A lit torch was carried from Olympia to the site of the Games through seven countries—Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Austria and Germany: a total journey of more than 3,000 km.
The American city of Denver, Colorado was elected to host the 1976 Winter Olympics, but in a referendum the population decided against them. The Games were eventually held in Innsbruck, Austria, which had also hosted the 1964 edition.
Jesse Owens of the United States won four gold medals in the sprint and long jump events, and became the most successful athlete to compete in Berlin, while Germany was the most successful country overall with 101 medals (38 of them gold); the United States placed a distant second with 57 medals. By the time the 30th IOC Session in Barcelona was scheduled, all but two bids were withdrawn: Barcelona itself and Berlin. Because only 19 voting members were present at the IOC Session, a postal vote was held, which Berlin won 43 - 16.
