At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, nine events in gymnastics were contested. The competitions were held from 10 August 1936 to 12 August 1936. [1]
However, in Berlin, the women’s team all-around was returned to the Olympic Program. Germany and Switzerland dominated the events, winning 22 of the 28 medals, with Germany winning 13 and Switzerland 9 medals. Germany won six of the nine events.
As the tallest of the team was only 5 feet 4inches, the women gymnasts understandingly did not like to be referred to as ‘amazons’! While most of the women in the Berlin Games wore shorts, the team of British gymnasts were dressed in skirts and long stockings. This was the regulation dress for women in the Amateur Gymnastics Association.
