6 sie 2015 · String test has always be accurate for me, give or take an inch. The horse has to be older than 6 months. Run a string from the coronet band to the gap in the knee. Measure the string and convert inches to hands. 16.25" = 16.1hh, etc I have seen horses stop growing at 2 and others grow until 7, so age doesn't mean a whole lot.

2 sty 2008 · Second string test method: measure from the front part of the coronet band on the hoof right where the hoofwall meets hair, and pull a string straight up to the center of the horses knee (where the dip is in the middle of the joint). That measurement will co-incide with the horses final height.

And what method do you use? Looked at a 4 year old colt last night. He was a stud colt running on pasture until this past June. Cute little dude - but emphasis on the little. He’s between 14.2-14.3 right now. We found a version of the string test measuring from ergot to elbow and doubling it - that had him finishing at 15.1 or so. That would be perfect really. 16 kwi 2023 · Here is how you do it: measure elbow to ergot/fetlock with a string. Then "flip" the string, rotating from the elbow and raising the bottom part of the string up, vertical and taut, aligned with the wither. This is the final horse height. better explained in this video….
At birth they are 61-64% of their adult height. 6 months is 83-86, and 9 months is 87-90, so that should give you some number to work with. At 12 months you can start doing the string tests though right at 12 months they might be a little off.
