Overall, the attenuation of solar UV at wavelengths that damage DNA by the ozone layer allows life to exist on the surface of the planet outside of the ocean. All air entering the stratosphere must pass through the tropopause, the temperature minimum that divides the troposphere and stratosphere.
Air is roughly a thousand times thinner at the top of the stratosphere than it is at sea level. The stratosphere is very dry air, containing little water vapor. Because of this, few clouds are found in this layer.
3 maj 2022 · The stratosphere is the layer bounded by the tropopause at its base (12 km; 7.5 mi; 39,000 ft)) up to the stratopause (55 km; 31 to 34 mi; 164,000 to 180,000 ft). Air pressure within the stratosphere is only about 1/1000 of the pressure at sea level.
At the top of the troposphere is a thin layer in which the temperature does not change with height. This means that the cooler, denser air of the troposphere is trapped beneath the warmer, less dense air of the stratosphere. Air from the troposphere and stratosphere rarely mix.
20 sie 2024 · The stratosphere extends from 4 -12 miles (6-20 km) above the Earth's surface to around 31 miles (50 km). This layer holds 19 percent of the atmosphere's gases but very little water vapor. In this region, the temperature increases with height.
10 gru 2020 · Coupling between the stratosphere and the troposphere contributes to extreme events at the Earth’s surface, and can help with predictability on timescales from weeks to decades, according to a...
Most ozone (about 90%) resides in a layer that begins between 6 and 10 miles (10 and 17 kilometers) above the Earth's surface and extends up to about 30 miles (50 kilometers). This region of the atmosphere is called the stratosphere.
