Women in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia bear the greatest burden of stillbirths in the world. More than three-quarters of estimated stillbirths in 2021 occurred in these two regions, with 47 per cent of the global total in sub-Saharan Africa and 32 per cent in South Asia.
In this study, we expanded the global stillbirth database and used a new approach to estimate stillbirth rates for all countries during the period 2000–19. We extended and updated the database with more than 2800 country-year datapoints from 171 countries, building on those provided by WHO in 2016.
