Stigma is a sociological concept that is important in medicine and health because it threatens health as much as the disease itself. We aimed to explore the causes, stigmatizers, consequences and coping strategies related to the stigma of diseases by systematically analyzing relevant literature.

Building on a robust line of stigma reduction literature in psychology, we develop a sociological framework for understanding how new cultural constructions that draw equivalences and remove blame shape public and structural stigma over time.
In terms of public stigma (stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination directed at people with mental illness), we discuss five theories: (1) modified labeling theory, (2) social-cognitive model, (3) stereotype content model, (4) implicit stigma, and (5) attribution theory.
