stigma has been defined as “stereotypes or negative views attributed to a person or groups of when their characteristics or behaviors are viewed as different from or inferior to people societal norms”, a definition which is clearly influenced by the standpoint of cognitive so-cial psychology.
Chapters address stigma reduction efforts at the individual, community, and national levels, and discuss what works and what doesn't. Others explore how holding different stigmatized identities compounds the burden of stigma and suggest ways to attend to these differences.
This volume, analyzing the most up-to-date research ways to intervene, is designed to give those who are working to overcome stigma a strong, research-based foundation for their work. Chapters address stigma reduction efforts at the individual, community, and national levels, and discuss what works and what doesn’t.

Stigma also restricts access to social and community-level resources relevant to good health and exposes individuals to more toxic environments.
