Later in his dream, Steven appears in the field again and looks around until he sees a pink palanquin. Steven abruptly wakes up again, with the tears returning.
My own theory is that Pink actually fused with her first Pearl at a ball, which is why Steven remembers it in that moment, and why Pink/Rose is so fascinated when she sees Garnett and fuses again with her new Pearl.
In Steven's dream in "Together Alone", she is portrayed as having a playful and happy personality, playing with Pink Diamond and keeping their friendship a secret from the other Diamonds. While under White Diamond's control, Pink Pearl was shown to express rather unsettling, robotic behavior.
Whereas the palanquin Steven saw was broken down and pink, this one is in perfect condition and colored blue. They realize that they're looking at a different palanquin when they overhear a gigantic hooded figure, accompanied by a Pearl, talking to the pink palanquin: Blue Diamond.
The two hug and Rose begins to shapeshift, her gem rotating and revealing itself to be a diamond. Rose Quartz reveals herself to be Pink Diamond, much to Steven's shock. Once out in the open, Pink shows Pearl a handful of dirt with the head of a single pink hibiscus and gives her the latter.
