I have a MacBook Pro and I’ve been searching this topic for a while but haven’t gotten it to work for me (Java version). I’ve tried connecting via Bluetooth and using Big Screen Mode on Steam.. the controller works for those menus but when I launch Minecraft, it doesn’t work at all.

I am using a macbook(Big Sur 11.1) and want to try connecting with a ps4 controller. I tried using steam but "gamepad driver" update kept showing up and i kept installing it for like 5 times now but nothing has changed. It works on steam big screen but with i entered minecraft, the controller stopped working.
The only small inconvenience is that my controller has to be wired. The fix is using controllable and using a USB to connect it to your computer to the controller. Then go in to controllable settings and click the new Ps4 Option that pops up. That should work.
