I 1972 ble Den norske stats oljeselskap AS, Statoil, opprettet, og to år senere ble Statfjord-feltet funnet i Nordsjøen. I 1979 ble Statfjord-feltet satt i produksjon, og i 1981 ble Statoil det første norske selskapet som fikk operatøransvar for et felt, på Gullfaks i Nordsjøen.
