Lower counts of specific causes of death for more recent months should be considered a result of delayed coding, not a reduction in the counts of deaths themselves. COVID–19 death coding is expedited, and counts may be more complete in comparison to other causes of death.

The first Michigan resident COVID-19 death was reported on February 25, 2020, and by the end of the 2022, 30,924 residents had died of the virus. As of December 31, 2022, the number of male deaths was 17,052 and the number of female deaths was 13,845.
