Several people involved in the film production, and possibly Tarkovsky himself, died from causes that some crew members attributed to the film's long shooting schedule in toxic locations. Sound designer Vladimir Sharun recalled:

I recently watched Tarkovsky’s Stalker, and I am struggling to understand why it is so revered. This isn’t a post trying to provide a “hot take” to stir controversy, I merely just want to understand why many of you admire and love this film, so that maybe I can alter my approach in future viewings.
