What is Radical? The radical of a number is the same as the root of a number. The root can be a square root, cube root, or in general, n th root. Thus, any number or expression that uses a root is known as a radical. The term radical is derived from the Latin word Radix which means root.
Below, you can find some examples of square roots of a fraction: Square root of 4/9: √(4/9) = √4 / √9 = 2/3. Square root of 1/100: √(1/100) = √1 / √100 = 1/10. Square root of 1/5: √(1/5) = √1 / √5 = 1/√5 = √5/5. Leaving roots in the denominator is not a very good habit. That's why we got rid of it in the last example.
When n is an odd number and a<0, root (n,a)<0. The n in root (n,a) (always a natural number greater than 1) is called the index or the order of the radical, and a is called the radicand. When there is no indicated index, as in root (a), the index 2 is implied and it is read “the square root of a."
Radical expressions written in simplest form do not contain a radical in the denominator. To eliminate the square root radical from the denominator, multiply both the numerator and the denominator by the conjugate of the denominator. See Example and Example.
