There are 3 possible ways to deal with nulls in expressions: using IsNull, Coalesce or CASE. I've explained these under separate headings below! The ISNULL Function. This function substitutes a given value when a column is null. The syntax is:

The SQL CASE Expression. The CASEexpression goes through conditions and returns a value when the first condition is met (like an if-then-else statement). So, once a condition is true, it will stop reading and return the result. If no conditions are true, it returns the value in the ELSEclause.
11 lip 2012 · CASE WHEN (ID IS NULL) THEN 'YES' ELSE 'NO' END AS ID_Value, I only have access to 2008 right now, but I'd hope that this syntax would still work in 2005 (seems like something that would be part of the original definition of CASE).
16 lip 2024 · IFNULL/ISNULL may function a little bit better in databases where these functions are tuned for cases involving two arguments. COALESCE can be more effective because it eliminates the requirement for nested IFNULL/ISNULL calls when handling several possible NULL values.
27 sty 2017 · You can use either CASE structure to do this, but you can't call a function if you use the CASE fieldname WHEN approach, so you can either use CASE WHEN fieldname condition: SELECT Name, CASE WHEN color = 'black' THEN 'b'. WHEN color = 'red' THEN 'r'. WHEN color IS NULL THEN 'empty'.
