I just came across this excellent post by Chris Beardsley with a sample workout for strength development as it pertains to speed athletes. He forgoes heavy squats for explosive plyometrics and eccentrics at lower volumes.
Do you want to have more speed for a prolonged period of time or in a short burst? Are you wanting general speed or the ability to be explosive in one particular movement? Would you classify yourself as physically fit currently?
2x10-12x400m @ 10k-5k pace with 40 sec rest and 3-4min rest between set. Great workout that you can do pretty much year-round if you are focusing on 5k and up. Good mix of strength and faster paces without it being too mentally taxing.
