Spectacled bears are the only bear species in South America with potentially as few as 2,500 mature individuals remaining. With the current pace of local development, we need to act quickly to protect spectacled bears in northern Peru by creating protected areas and continuing research.
Spectacled Bear Conservation (SBC) is a team of researchers and conservationists working to study and protect the endangered spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus), also known as the Andean bear.
Our conservation center is located in Batán Grande, Lambayeque, Peru, and is the headquarters for our team and our work to protect spectacled bears. Our local Felti team meets here weekly, we hold Felti training workshops and host education sessions for local school children.
We have developed a conservation model based on community empowerment, habitat protection and research to maximize our conservation impact and tackle key challenges facing spectacled bears. Focusing on bears (a keystone and umbrella species), is also strategically protecting other wildlife and local ecosystems.
Map and identify bear populations inhabiting dry and montane forests in the northern Andes in Peru, and identify key threats to these populations. Better understand habitat use by monitoring seasonal movements of individuals and their relation with food availability and seasonality.
