10 sty 2004 · Specific gravity measures the density of the urine, relative to the mass of an equal volume of water, and it is determined by using a refractometer. Osmolality, a measure of the number of solute particles within the urine, may also be used to differentiate diseases.
Why measure urine specific gravity (USG)? USG measurement is used frequently in veterinary practice to help evaluate renal function by assessing whether water is being excreted or conserved appropriately, according to need.
The urine specific gravity (SG) is determined using a refractometer designed for veterinary samples, which includes a scale calibrated specifically for cat urine. SG for species other than cats should be determined using the scale for dogs.
