Easy to grow and easy to care for, Southern Wax Myrtle is valued for its showy berries and dense, shiny, evergreen foliage. Very versatile, it is a popular choice for screens, hedges, shrub borders, erosion control along stream banks, or wetland gardens.
It is native to the coastal plain from southern New Jersey into the Florida Keys to eastern Texas and southeast Oklahoma down into Central America. The leathery, shiny deep green leaves range from 1.5 to 4.5 inches long by 1/3 to 2 inches wide and have the wonderful bayberry fragrance when crushed.
Southern wax myrtle is an incredibly tough North American native. It tolerates a wide range of environmental stresses, including wet soil, drought, poor soil, salt spray in seaside plantings, heat, and high winds. The aromatic berries are useful for scenting candles and soap. Plant is synonymous with, Myrtus cerifera.
