PS3 finally detected and reinstalled the system software that way. I just got a used PS3 Slim off eBay and bought a 1TB Seagate HD to upgrade from the original 120GB. The console itself was working fine before I tried upgrading. Ran PS3 games, launched OK. I updated to 4.88 via the internet.
I bought a used ps3 slim and I had a SAMSUNG SSD 120GB flying around that I was not using so I decided to format it and replace the hdd. (formatting done via PC, right-click -> format -> default specs). So i put in the ps3, that worked fine. I downloaded the update file from the playstation homepage.
