17 maj 2022 · In acute hyponatremia, sodium levels drop rapidly — resulting in potentially dangerous effects, such as rapid brain swelling, which can result in a coma and death. Premenopausal women appear to be at the greatest risk of hyponatremia-related brain damage.
In individuals with cancer, this is an important contributor to low sodium levels and significantly affects treatment. Our patient, whose solute intake has likely been around 300 mOsm/kg, can only produce ∼5 L of urine if his urine osmolality was 60 mOsm/kg.
In cancer patients, hyponatremia is a serious comorbidity that requires particular attention as its treatment varies by pathophysiologic groups, and its consequences can have a deleterious effect on the patient’s health. A serum sodium level <130 mEq/L was identified in 4.2% of 6,766 patients who had assessments at admission, and this was independently associated with a significantly greater risk for in-hospital mortality (odds ratio [OR], 2.47; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.70–3.60).
Hyponatremia is a condition where sodium levels in your blood are lower than normal. In many cases, too much water in your body dilutes sodium levels. It’s also possible to lose too much sodium. You may have a short-term treatment plan or a long-term plan. What is hyponatremia?
24 mar 2021 · Hyponatremia is the most common electrolyte disorder in patients with cancer and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Innovation in cancer therapies has led to substantial improvement in cancer outcomes, but also to new therapy-related toxicities, including electrolyte disturbance.
22 mar 2015 · This study has examined a large cohort of patients with cancer and severe hyponatraemia (serum sodium level <115 mmol/L). We have confirmed the very poor survival in these patients, extending this to examine OS rather than the previously reported in-hospital mortality or 90 day mortality .
